Joining is my nemesis! I either sew them or join them with rows of slip stitch, depending on what I'm making and whether I want the join to show. Sometimes the little slip stitch ridge can look kind of cool.
I started doing my granny this way, and I *love* it! I hate sewing at all--weaving in ends is really pushing it for me. So any shortcut I can find for joining squares just makes life that much more enjoyable for me. I've got 3 squares finished and joined, ready to start the fourth....
Getting back to crochet basics, granny squares are where it's at. Simple grannies, complex grannies, grannies for all sorts of projects but mostly for fun and relaxation -- you won't want to make just one. There's no time limit, no restriction on the type of granny square you can make, and no requirement about your finished project.
