granny hot pad

hi all, new here and new to crochet. been a knitter for a few years now, but just picked up a hook for the first time this winter. did all of one granny square before i decided to make a crocheted set of kitchen items (hot pad & pot holders) for a friend's birthday. nothing like starting out small!

i used Tahki Cotton Classic, doubled up to make the right thickness, and an H hook. since i was out of town when i made the project, i had no means to block and ended up last-minute adding the orange border in single crochet to help tie it all together and smooth the sides a bit.

the finished hot pad

the colors were inspired by the 'sunset' rug below, the central object in my friend's new living room/kitchen color scheme. it was a bit challenging to match the colors with only this digital image to go by. you can see the full, finished set on my blog here.

overall, i enjoyed making them, but found weaving in the ends a bit tiresome. also, cotton is a bit hard on the hands. might try other squares or a ripple in the future, but using an acrylic/stretchier yarn.

What lovely colors. I especially like the yellow/orange/red combination. Perfect colors for a "hot" pad ;-)

A nice idea for the usage of grannies too! Especially if one wants a smaller project.

That looks great I think you did an amazing job at matching the colours of your friend's kitchen (especially from a photograph). She will be thrilled! :0)
